Wilmslow Wells for Africa is a charity which raises money to bring fresh water or improved sanitation to remote African communities. Totally run by volunteers, the overheads are minimal which means that 99.3% off all money raised is spent directly on projects. Since it started in 1984, over £1.7 million has been raised and used to fund over 400 projects in 21 different African countries. At a conservative estimate, this has brought fresh water or sanitation to over 650,000 people.
Working with trusted partners, the projects we fund include deep and shallow boreholes, spring protection schemes, rainwater harvesting, latrines and handwashing facilities along with the maintenance training required to ensure that the vital facilities provided are kept in good order. This brings great health benefits. It also means that the 2/3 hours per day spent carrying water, often through dangerous country and collected from a polluted source, can be spent on other more worthwhile activities such as education, agriculture or home-making.
Approximately one third of the money we raise comes from events we run and two thirds directly through donations. You can donate to Wilmslow Wells here and you can register to be kept informed about our events here.
