2017
Poynton Male Voice Choir Their Christmas concert raised funds in memory of David Mosley. David was a supporter of WWfA and member of the choir. These funds of £500 will be added to those given in his memory by family and friends earlier in the year. They will be used to fund a well in Uganda in his memory.
Christmas Cards Their sale raised £799. Many thanks to Rosemary Stubbs for the lovely design, James Townsley for generously printing them at no cost to our charity and also to the Christmas Card Charity Shop at Wilmslow for allowing us to sell the cards in the shop again.
Betty Fish Betty has left us a very generous legacy. Betty was a member of our General Committee for many years and was to be found always behind the cake stall. A huge number of the cakes were made by Betty, her car came laden. At Gardens Day many looked forward to the fresh salmon sandwiches that she made. Her generosity and that of Geoffrey Brocklehurst and Joyce McClure live on in the large number of projects that we have been able to fund and therefore the many lives that will be transformed.
Mothers Union, St Mary, Nether Alderley Thank you for the welcome received when Jenny Gibbs went to talk to them about WWfA. £72.50 was given. Thank you.
Souperday October 26th This was a busy day for us, at the end of which we had raised £1,251 – a fantastic sum. Not only did we sell homemade soup and bread, not forgetting the cakes (!) and preserves but also as usual this year’s Christmas Card. Extra cards were on sale, made by Dede plus cross stitch pictures made by Diana Armstrong. Thank you to all who help make this such a successful day from those who help throughout the day and those who bring goodies to sell. More details here
AGM October 9th Ian Sanderson of Afrinspire gave a fascinating talk about their work in Uganda. At the moment the drought continues in southern Africa greatly affecting sources of water.
Bridge Drive October 5th. This was another fun afternoon of Bridge with a delicious tea. It raised a wonderful £853. Many thanks go to Morley Club who allow us to use their club at no charge and also to Jenny and Jim Morris who are on hand to answer bridge questions that arise.
October Trustees meeting At the Trustees meeting funding for eight new projects was agreed.
Yr3/4 Nether Alderley School raised £1,049.30
The children decided to raise money by being sponsored to carry a bucket of water. In teams of four the aim was to walk 2 km although all teams walked much further. It was agreed to link this money to the building of a huge water harvester at Eucarbet Academy, Kenya. It is a primary school for orphan and destitute children. At the moment, these Kenyan children walk to the nearby valleys to collect water in jerry cans. The water will be used for both consumption and gardening.
Gardens Day 2017
We are very grateful to the gardeners who work so hard to show their gardens at their best. Also to Shirley Baulkwill for her dedicated work not only this year but over the past 12 years, bringing the gardens together. The amazing sum of £14,810 this year is a tribute to Shirley and the gardeners. The other equally important tribute to Shirley for what she has achieved comes not only in the increase in income that we have received over the years from Gardens Day but also from the comments that we hear. It is seen to be one of the best days in Wilmslow, bringing great enjoyment to many people both locally and further afield. We thank Shirley for her unfailing drive to make it a success.
Handforth Children’s Concert
organised by Rosemary Thomason doubled the sum that they raised last year for us to £300. A fantastic result.
Diana Armstrong
Diana was an enthusiastic helper at WWA events. Although not a committee member, she could always be found behind the heavily laden Cake Stall, serving cakes with her delightful smile and friendly manner. She spent her whole life in this area, being born and brought up in Alderley Edge then moving to Wilmslow when she married. We shall miss Diana at our Souperdays and Gardens Days.
Geoffrey Brocklehurst
has left a generous legacy to us.
Many thanks to the family and friends of Kay Ferguson
for £5,600 given in her memory. This is attached to project 215 – Katole, Zambia, funding a borehole to provide clean water at the new school being built. 3,000 in this poor rural community will have safe water for the first time.
Styal brownies
raised £132.50 from their sponsored swim. Well done!
St. John’s Association of Church fellowships
raised £150 at their Annual Spring Fair. Thank you.
Amazon
Thank you for the gift of £610
Souperday March 4th
This was a very busy day and raised over £1400. This could not be done without the veritable army of volunteers that make cakes, bread, soup and man stalls to help raise monies for us. Thank you for your hard work, generosity and loyalty. This includes Liz Maddock who makes all our bread for us, the 3rd Wilmslow Brownies for helping at our Souperday and Fulshaw WI for providing so many cakes.
Soup Lunch for Barnby Choir Singing Day
£125 was raised from the lunch – thank you
